Every person who walked out averted their gaze from Sherry and Andre as they passed by. Sherry was

about to burst into tears.

“People like you will get what’s coming to you!”

I couldn’t take it anymore and smiled at her. “Why are you blaming them? Aren’t they scared of those thugs coming for them? Just like how you gathered a bunch of people to beat up that girl back at the school gate, right?”

Sherry bit her lower lip so hard she almost drew blood but had nothing to say in return. I got the feeling that this incident hadn’t really changed her at all.

Finally, it was my turn. Sherry muttered behind me, “Andre, you can’t count on her. Don’t forget she wouldn’t even lend you her jacket. She’s probably wishing we all get what’s coming to us.”

I sat down across from the principal, recalling that day vividly, and spoke plainly, “That guy went after Andre on purpose. That’s what I saw.”

There was no need for me to lie. Besides, even if the alley surveillance missed the key moments, they hadn’t noticed that a camera was positioned in a corner further down the alley. That angle should have

captured the whole scene.

The police would have already found that out.

When I left the office, the others rushed toward me.

“Betty, what did you say?”

“I told the truth.”

“That guy really did it on purpose!”

Their faces changed instantly. “Are you asking for trouble?”

“You’ve got a lot of balls.”

I straightened up, flicking my bangs with confidence. “Maybe it’s because my family has a bit of money, so I’m not scared of that guy with just a little.”

Sherry was called in for questioning next. Andre leaned against the railing and came up beside me, his voice low and hoarse. “Thanks”

Witness testimonies are just supplements. The final investigation results wouldn’t change because of one statement from me. But I didn’t want to emphasize it to Andre for fear of igniting a new conversation.

“Betty.” He stared quietly into the distance. “I don’t think I’ve ever told you this. I like you, and I’m sorry.”

After this serious injury, Andre seemed even more fragile.

“Ive never liked Sherry. Maybe it’s because she’s been the only one by my side since we were kids, and I developed a possessiveness toward her that I mistook for liking her. It was only after I fell for you that I realized that feeling was different.”

After a brief pause, Andre gave a bland smile. “I’ve always known I owe you an apology. But I worried that if I apologized, you’d forgive me, and in your eyes, I would just become a stranger.”

I hadn’t talked to him in a long time. “Right now, you’re just someone I find pretty annoying and a stranger.”

Andre nodded, still smiling. “I know.”

He tilted his head and met my eyes, adding, “Betty, I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have taken your sincerity for granted and messed it up. And I shouldn’t have known I owed you an apology and let it drag on for so long without saying anything.”

I calmly nodded and walked away. I accepted his apology, but that didn’t mean I forgave him.

On the day final grades were released, Andre still hadn’t returned to school. The class monitor gossiping with us said Andre’s stitches had opened up too soon after being closed.

She put a bowl in front of me. “This will probably leave him with some lasting issues.”
