“Living person?” Elsie caught the pensive look on Charlotte’s face. 

Charlotte was looking at Leland. 

Elsie glanced back and forth between the two patients. 

One was bedbound, the other wheelchair–bound. 

Her eyes widened. ‘Is Mr Hewitt—’_ 

She caught herself. 

She cast a hurried look towards the door before bending down to whisper in Charlotte’s ear. ‘Is Mr Hewitt the organ donor?” 

charlotte nodded. 

Then she warned the housekeeper in a stem voice. ‘Don’t breathe a word of this to Kira, you understand?” 

Elsie nodded quickly. ‘I do, I do.” 

It took her a long while to absorb the shocking news. 

The housekeeper wning her hands 

‘But Madam, how can you just give up? There has to be some other way. Another donor, perhaps?! 

‘There isn’t. And I’m tired of fighting.’ Charlotte’s voice was filled with fatigue, but also tranquillity. ‘Let nature take its course. I’ve come back to Stamford because I don’t want to die in a lonely hospital bed. 

She clutched Elsie’s hand. want to die in my own home, surrounded by my loved ones.” 

Elsie’s voice shook “But…but…! 

she had no idea what she wanted to say, 

She knew Charlotte well. 

The woman wouldn’t hurt a fly, let alone take someone’s life to save her own. 

But neither could Elsie stand by and watch her give up the fight. 

Elsie grasped the wheelchair’s push handle. 

She couldn’t help but look at Leland again.
