Stroking her long hair, he whispered, ‘Of course I love you.” 

Kira woke up alone the next morning. 

But Austyn’s side of the bed looked slept in. 

She yawned and stretched. 

She wasn’t going to school today, so she lazed around for a while before getting up. 

It was almost nine–thirty. 

Austyn must be at work. 

Kira padded into the bathroom, brushed her teeth, washed her face and noticed, to her satisfaction, some flesh returning to her cheeks. 

Her cheekbones no longer protruded like someone emaciated. 

Kira peeked into the study on her way downstairs. 

The door was ajar. 

Austyn had changed into a dark blue suit and a black tie. 

Kira realised that she had never seen him wear anything else. 

It was either a suit, a set of pyjamas or a bathrobe. 

She doubted if the man owned a single t–shirt or a pair of trainers.

Kira tiptoed away, afraid of disturbing her hardworking husband. 

She was feeling a little guilty about last night. 

If she hadn’t distracted him, he probably would have finished his work by then.

‘Elsie, there’s no way I can finish all this by myself!‘ 

There was enough food for a family of twelve 

‘You don’t have to.‘ Elsie led her to sit down at a chair. ‘I’m just trying out new recipes. Sample them and tell me which ones you like.”
