Kira scoffed. ‘Georgina Vaughn, those are things you did. You were the one who talked behind my back. Don’t you dare try and pin it on 

She turned to the man next to Georgina. ‘I’m not lying, Gideon told me everything. He was the victim of Georgina’s wicked scheme. He was drugged and assaulted by Georgina. 

Kira couldn’t bring herself to use the word “rape,‘ though that was what Georgina did. 

“G–Gideon’s in Stamford?‘ Georgina blurted

“Of course I didn’t! If I’d known…! 

Kira watched, amazed, as red colour spread across Georgina’s face. 

Why was Georgina blushing?

Harlan, who’d been watching the heated exchange with an increasingly deep furrow between his brows, shook off Georgina’s hand. 

“Why are you blushing?” he demanded. 

‘No, I’m not. I’m just- 

‘Take out your mirror and look at yourself. Your cheeks are red as a monkey’s bottom. Is it true, what she said? Harlan pointed to Kira. ‘Did you do those disgusting things she said?? 

“No!‘ Georgina seized Harlan’s hand. ‘She’s lying! She made it up! I didn’t do anything!” 

Harlan stepped back. 

He obviously didn’t believe her. 

Georgina was both exasperated and mortified. 

She took out her frustration on Kira. ‘Bitch! Look what you did!‘ 

She raised her arm to slap Kira.

‘Georgina!‘ Helen rushed to her daughter’s rescue. 

Harlan stepped forward but was pinned to the spot by a glare from Austyn. 

Austyn released his hold on Georgina’s wrist, shoving her back 

She stumbled and almost fell. 

‘Mr McCarthy! Michael, who had been standing by and watching silently this whole time, came forward. 

His hand was outstretched

She must be doing this deliberately, provoking Georgina into slapping her so she could play the victim.

“Mr Vaughn, Austyn said in a frosty voice, ‘is this how you teach your daughter to treat others?” 

Michael Vaughn got the message straightaway. 

He yanked on Georgina’s arm and pushed her to the front. ‘Mr McCarthy, forgive me. What Georgina did was wrong. She needs to be punished.!

“Shut up! Michael glared at his daughter. ‘I taught you better than this, but you never listen. The only thing you can do right now is beg Mr McCarthy for his forgiveness. He’s a generous man. You got lucky. If it were anybody else today, you wouldn’t be let off the hook so easily 

Georgina looked to Harlan for help, but her fiancé turned away, still upset by what he heard earlier. 

Austyn curled his lip. Mr Vaughn, putting me on a moral high horse is not going to work. I’m not a generous man, and I’m not letting your daughter off the hook so easily.” 

Michael offered an obsequious smile. ‘Oh, I wasn’t trying to put you on a high horse, Mr McCarthy. I’m just telling the truth.” Austyn turned d to Kira. G 

“Give me a minute.‘ 

“What are you doing? Kira asked.. 

Austyn gave her hand a reassuring squeeze 

He said to Michael, ‘Mr Vaughn, a word?”

He had seen enough to conclude that Kira Hewitt was not a woman they could afford to offend at the moment. Georgina was no longer in the mood to fight with Kira,
