But she couldn’t help turning her head and stealing a glance at the man in the driver’s seat. 

His side profile was just as handsome as his front, minus the intimidating aura. 

“Didn’t you leave? Why did you come back?” 

Austyn had one hand on the steering wheel. “Who said I left?” 

“But you walked away just now.” 

“I was going to the basement to get the

Kira struggled to find a suitable retort but failed. 

Of course she left. 

She thought he had walked off. 

She wasn’t going to stand there in the scorching sun, shoeless, and wait for someone who would never come, like Godot. Neither spoke for a while. 

Kira looked out the window and couldn’t recognise the road they were on. ‘Where are we going?” 

This didn’t look like the way home. 

‘You’ll know it when we get there,‘ was Austyn’s terse reply. 

Kira knitted her brows. 

What was with the mystery? 

What new game was he playing now? 

But she knew she wasn’t going to get a straight answer out of him. 

So Kira just gave up and closed her eyes. 

The afternoon heat was making her drowsy. 

She settled in for a long nap 

It was nice at first, with the aircon blowing cool air on her face and the steady hum of the engine acting as a soporific. 

But Kira suddenly felt unable to breathe, like someone had placed a giant boulder on her chest 

This Shall Be Our First Date 

Kira never learned how to swim. 

Her father tried to teach her when she was a kid, but she would just clutch the floatie and cry whenever she was put in the water. 

Eventually, her father gave up. 

Now the same feeling returned. 

The same feeling of being underwater, of drowning 

There was no air. 

She couldn’t breathe. 

She opened her mouth and gasped for air, but something took the opportunity to slip inside.. 

The intruder took possession of her mouth and forced her tongue to respond. 

It was taking air away from her lungs. 

Kira’s eyes snapped open. 

She saw black, thick eyelashes. 

Then Austyn’s face. 

Kira shrank back and slapped his arm, hard. 

Austyn drew back and let go of her. 

Kira sucked in a big lungful of air. 

‘You almost suffocated me! 

Austyn swept his eyes over her parted lips. 

He felt thirsty. 

“You were out like a log. I couldn’t wake you up.‘ 

This was the only method he could think of. 

A method he enjoyed immensely. 

‘You could’ve just given my shoulders a shake, Kira thought. “There was no need to stick your tongue down my throat.‘ 

But she decided there was no point getting into an argument over the best wake–up method. 

“Where are we?‘ She looked out the window, 

‘Carpark.‘ 

‘I can see that.‘ She rolled her eyes. ‘Carpark of what place? 

Austyn was already out of the car. “Come on.

Kira stumbled out of the car, staggering in her high heels. 

Austyn had to give her a hand. 

‘Let’s go.” 

‘Towhere” 

Two minutes later, Kira stepped out of the lift and found herself back in the familiar shopping mall. 

What were they doing back here? 

Austyn brought her to the shoe shop. 

The went up to a sales clerk. ‘Pick out a pair of flats for her.” 

The sales clerk recognised Austyn, who had been here just a couple of hours ago. 

‘Yes, sir.” 

She showed Kira to an ottoman. “Miss, please have a seat. I’ll bring out our latest flats for you to try on.” 

Kira sat down. 

The lady returned a minute later with three different pairs of flats. 

She was about to squat down in front of Kira when Austyn stopped her. ‘Let me

Kira watched Austyn get down on one knee, just like he did outside the hospital. 

Her brain went into overdrive. 

Austyn was acting so out of character. 

He removed her high heels and helped her slip on a pair of dark fuchsia satin almond–toe flats. 

Each shoe had a square crystal buckle encased in a gunmetal frame. 

‘Does it fit?” he asked, “Do you like it?” 

His voice was low and deep. 

When they were in bed together, he’d sometimes use the same voice and ask, ‘How about this? Do you like it? 

Then he would go on to push her over the edge. 

Kira blinked 

She wriggled her toes and moved her feet. “They’re nice. Comfy. No chating.” 

‘Do you want to try the other pairs?” 

‘No, no, this is fine. They’re perfect.‘ 

‘We’ll get this pair.” Austyn handed his credit card to the sales clerk. 

Kira left the shop holding a bag containing her high heels. 

“What are we doing?‘ she asked. ‘Or rather, what are you doing? 

Austyn kept on walking ahead, hands in his pants pockets. Haven’t you figured it out yet? We’re on a date.” 

Kira’s mouth was open in the shape of the letter ‘0‘ 

If she opened it any wider, her jaw was going to drop.. 

A date? 

Austyn continued walking 

Kira stood rooted to the spot. 

When she finally came to her senses, she jogged after him. 

The flats were so comfortable, she had no trouble at all catching up with him. 

Austyn scanned the floor they were on. “What do you want to do? Movies? The bowling alley? Escape room? Laser tag?” 

Kira was panting 

‘Or do you want to grab a bite first? 

‘No!‘ Kira was still 

I stuffed from her second lunch at the hospital cafeteria. 

‘No food then. What do you want to do?

“We’re on a date. Isn’t the girl always the one who calls the shots on a date?” 

Kira was still trying to wrap her mind around what was happening. ‘Why do you want to go on a date all of a sudden?” 

Austyn halted. 

He looked into her eyes. “You thought we were on a date earlier, didn’t you? You seemed to like that idea so much. So, why not?‘

Austyn nodded.

She grabbed his hand and held it in hers. ‘Let’s go then! First, I want food!! ‘Didn’t us 

you say no to food a minute ago?‘ Austyn asked with a smile in his voice. 

‘But that was a minute ago, and that was before I knew we were Austyn shrugged.

Austyn knew many ice creams were highly processed. 

They had ingredients like artificial flavourings and additives and even preservatives. 

Some of the stuff could be really bad for a person’s health, especially a girl’s. 

“No means no 

She might get a stomach ache, 

But Kira did not see it that way. 

She stomped her feet indignantly. “But 

I just want ice cream!‘ 

“You can have something else. How about candy floss?” 

“No! I want ice cream!” 

Austyn frowned ‘You can’t have ice cream.” 

Kira huffed

They were barely two minutes into their first date and already fighting
