The smile on his face vanished. 

The gaze turned into a glare. 

‘Are you cursing your own husband? 

‘Of course not. It’s just that given the way you were driving, an accident seemed inevitable. 

Austyn gave his wife a dirty look. 

He got back in the car. 

She didn’t move. 

Austyn honked. ‘You want to spend the night on the road? Get in!” 

‘But I don’t want to get in next to a drunk driver.‘ 

‘I’m not going to drive. Just get in!! 

“Are you sure?” 

He honked the horn again. 

Kira limped slowly back to the front passenger seat. 

She didn’t put on her seatbelt, getting ready to bolt the moment his hand reached for the gear stick. 

Austyn rested both hands on the steering wheel. 

Kira leaned back against the headrest, her mind put at ease. 

The night air was heavy with the fragrance of blooming flowers. 

Austyn rolled down the window on his side.

Kira wanted to protest, but she didn’t want to get him all riled up again. 

A breeze was blowing. 

She was upwind, anyway. 

The cigarette smelled kind of nice, actually. 

It was a little woody, rich yet light. 

Her father used to smoke as well. 

Kira closed her eyes and waited for her heartbeat to return to normal. 

With one hand over the window sill, Austyn made a call on his phone. 

His voice was low. 

Kira didn’t catch what he said. 

He hung up after two sentences. 

Austyn took another pull on his cigarette. 

He glanced at Kira’s face 

She looked tranquil now, no longer the picture of panic two minutes ago. 

‘Don’t do that again,‘ he said in a deep voice. 

‘Do what?‘ She opened her eyes. 

“Dash in front of the car like that. I could’ve run you over.” 

Now that the adrenaline rush was over, Kira was hit by a belated sense of fear. 

But she wasn’t going to admit that in front of him, so she just shrugged and said, ‘I knew it wasn’t going to happen. I have faith in your driving skill.” 

“You trust me that much?” Austyn turned to look at her. 

‘Sure. You’re a good driver.‘ 

She offered a smile that she hoped was convincing. 

Austyn couldn’t take his eyes off her. 

He knew she was pretty, but when she smiled at him and said she trusted him wholeheartedly, she turned into a vision. of absolute loveliness. 

It was as if someone had added a beautifying filter to her face. 

She was positively glowing 

A burning sensation started Austyn out of his trance. 

Austyn flicked away the cigarette ash on his index finger. 

He blamed it on the alcohol. 

For a moment there, he’d thought the woman incredibly beautiful. Beautiful enough for him to fall in love with.

The pain in her left ankle came back.

‘My ankle hurts.” 

He tossed the butt of the burnt–out cigarette away. ‘Did you sprain it?‘ 

‘I think so. 

He snorted. “That’ll teach you to pull a stunt like that just now.” 

‘No, I sprained it back at the club, when I jumped down from the countertop too fast.” 

“What? Why didn’t you tell me?‘ 

That was almost half an hour ago. 

Kira didn’t reply. 

Back then, she was anxious to leave the restroom and avoid getting seen. 

And it wasn’t hurting that much.
