“This is not something your men can help me with. Besides, this was a promise I made, and I can’t just break it,” Dustin said, sipping on his tea.
With the Celestial Eye, he had a significantly higher success rate in searching for the Dracan essence. For anyone else, it would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
“Fine, you’re free to pursue the Dracan essences. But what about after you find it?” Rufus asked again.
“I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I haven’t thought that far ahead.” Dustin shook his head.
“Since you haven’t considered it, I’ll take the liberty of doing so for you!”
Rufus asserted sternly, “Once you fulfill your promise, you’ll return home and assume the throne. I’ll ensure everything is well-arranged to spare you any concerns.”
“I told you. I don’t want the throne,” Dustin refused outright.
“You’re my son. If you don’t become the Prince, who will? Austin?” Rufus snapped.
“Austin is talented in all aspects. So, why not?” Dustin retorted.
“Austin is undeniably outstanding. However, his skills are better suited for the role of Grand General, not the Prince of West Lucozia!”
Rufus continued solemnly, “Even though West Lucozia wields great power, internal conflicts are rampant.
“Once I’m no longer here, various factions will vie for control, and dangers will surround us from all directions.
“How is Austin supposed to keep them at bay? Entrusting him with such a responsibility would only expose him to significant risks!”
“And how can you be certain that I can handle them?” Dustin countered.
“You-” Rufus began, struggling to find the right words. Eventually, his words transformed into a long sigh, and he looked profoundly weary. It was as if his energy had been drained away.
“You’re right. I was too impatient. I shouldn’t have pushed you.” Rufus forced a smile.
With a somber expression, he continued, “I always envisioned you as the perfect successor, capable of taking over West Lucozia, leading the Rhys family to glory, and ensuring the well- being of the people.
“I was considering the big picture but neglected your feelings. In retrospect, what matters most is that you’re safe and happy. It’s not important whether you become the Prince.
“I was wrong. I shouldn’t have imposed my wishes on you. So, I will support whatever decision you make. No matter what it is that you decide to do. I just hope that when you have the time, you can visit home more often.”
Dustin found himself at a loss for words upon hearing Rufus. As he gazed at his father’s graying hair and weathered face, a swirl of mixed emotions enveloped him.
For the first time, he questioned if he made the right decision. Born into the lap of luxury in West Lucozia, he wondered if the time had come for him to shoulder some responsibilities.
