Jessica threw herself onto the couch inside her apartment, staring at the pastry in her hands. She lifted it toward the trash can several times, but couldn’t bring herself to let go.
She finally let out a long sigh and kept the pastry. Food was innocent of whatever was going on between her and Brian and Jacob.
Jessica unwrapped the packaging. The pastry looked perfect. She took a tentative bite, and the sweet flavor instantly won her over. Within minutes, she’d finished the entire piece and was already reaching for another.
Outside, Brian walked Jacob home, then returned to recheck the mailbox. Only after confirming nothing new had appeared did he relax.
He started preparing dinner.
When everything was ready and he was about to take some to Jessica, he opened his door just as she came downstairs with her trash.
“It’s windy out there. Let me take that for you, Jessica,” Brian said without hesitation.
Jessica hadn’t expected it. Before she could react, Brian snatched the garbage bag from her hands. He replaced it with a beautifully packaged takeout
container.
“I’ll take care of the trash. Dinner is chicken noodle soup–make sure you eat it.” Brian left those words hanging in the air as he turned and hurried away.
Jessica couldn’t even stop him in time.
In the elevator, Brian pressed the floor button and caught sight of something bulging in the garbage bag. His eyes widened. ‘That is-‘
The elevator stopped. Brian stared at the open bag, spotting the clean pastry wrapper inside. A smile tugged at his lips.
“Hey, are you getting off or what?” A resident waiting outside the elevator stood there speechless, watching this handsome man grin like an idiot at a bag
of trash.
“Sorry.” Brian returned to reality, quickly tied up the bag, apologized, and strode out of the elevator.
Minutes later, back in the apartment, Jacob had just finished setting down his fork when Brian returned with the good news. The boy’s eyes went wide.
“Really? Mom actually ate the pastry I gave her?” Jacob asked.
“Yeah, so don’t worry. Deep down, Jessi doesn’t want to push you away.” Brian reached out and ruffled Jacob’s hair.
“Yes! This is amazing!” Jacob jumped up and down excitedly, nearly knocking over the fork he’d just placed.
Brian quickly steadied him. “Be careful.” Bumping the fork was one thing, but if he hit the bowl and hurt himself, that would be a real problem.
Jacob calmed down and looked up at his father, his little face flushed with excitement. “Dad, I want to go out again tomorrow! I want to keep bringing good food to Mom!”
“Okay.” Brian agreed without hesitation.
The next day, Brian took another day off and brought Jacob to explore another scenic spot famous for its food.

Meanwhile, Weston stared at Brian’s third leave request of the week and sighed silently. He looked at the mountain of files on his desk and could only pray that the guy would win Jessica back soon.
While Brian and Jacob were out on their second adventure, Jessica was making her rounds at her shopping mall.
Jessica said, “The stores at the first–floor entrance need to be organized better. Their merchandise blocks the walkways and makes it uncomfortable for
