Chapter 333
As the months passed, the baby became more active, making Jessica oversleep again.
When she finally got ready and stepped outside, she ran into Brian walking back with Jacob.
Brian and Jacob looked dejected, like they’d been hit by something devastating.
Jessica instinctively asked, “What’s wrong?”
Jacob opened his mouth to tell her what happened that morning, but Brian quickly covered his mouth.
“Nothing. You’re up–did you eat breakfast?” Brian asked.
Jessica stared at Jacob with his mouth covered, her mood instantly souring. She snapped back without hesitation. “Whether I ate breakfast or not is none of your business.”
She walked around Brian and Jacob and left. She thought, ‘If you’re keeping my secrets, why should I answer your questions?‘
Brian’s secrecy really pissed Jessica off. She couldn’t control her spiraling thoughts.
Brian and Jacob knew something but were afraid to let her know.
Combined with everything that had happened these past few days, Jessica couldn’t help wondering if Brian had already discovered who was behind it all but chose to protect them anyway–maybe even planning to keep her in the dark forever.
Otherwise, there was no reason he wouldn’t let Jacob speak.
The more Jessica thought about it, the more possible it seemed. Her heart grew colder by the minute. She never should have expected anything from
Brian and Jacob.
Jacob watched Jessica’s figure disappear behind the elevator doors and couldn’t stop complaining. “Dad, why didn’t you let me tell her? Now you’ve made Mom angry again.”
Jessica had clearly been worried about them at first, but the moment Brian covered his mouth, her whole attitude changed.
Brian’s voice was low and firm. “We haven’t caught anyone yet. What’s the point of telling her except to make her panic?”
Jacob asked worriedly, “But what if Mom thinks we’re deliberately hiding things from her?”
“That’s still better than scaring her,” Brian replied hesitantly.
“Is that really true?” Jacob looked doubtful. Something felt off about Brian’s explanation, but he couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong.
“Alright, stop overthinking it. Let’s go inside for breakfast. I still need to take some to your mother after we eat.”
Brian ruffled Jacob’s hair and steered him toward the house. The interruption scattered Jacob’s thoughts, and he forgot all about his earlier concerns.
At the office, Jessica had been wrestling with paperwork all morning, her irritation mounting by the hour. By noon, she couldn’t take it anymore. She left early and headed to her favorite restaurant nearby, hoping good food would lift her spirits.
She had just ordered and settled into her seat when a familiar figure slid into the chair across from her.
“Jessi, what a coincidence! You’re eating here too,” Madeline said.
Jessica looked up from her magazine, her expression flat as she stared at Madeline, who had invited herself to sit down.

Chapter 333
“I don’t recall asking you to join me,” Jessica sald coldly.
Madeline smiled warmly, “Come on, Jessi, don’t be so cold. Since we’re both dining alone, why don’t we sit together? it’s the perfect chance for me to ask you some questions about pregnancy nutrition.”
She waved down a passing waitress. “I’ll have the same set meal as her, please.”
Jessica’s voire cut through at the same moment. “I don’t know this woman and don’t want to share a table. Please ask her to leave.”
The waitress‘ professional smile froze on her face. “Well, I…”
Jessica didn’t give her a chance to smooth things over. She raised an eyebrow and spoke bluntly. “Is there a problem? Or does this restaurant have a policy of forcing customers to share tables?”
She knew perfectly well this upscale restaurant had no such policy. Most diners were executives from nearby companies with meals averaging over a thousand dollars.
Any restaurant with that kind of policy would have been shut down by complaints long ago.
The waitress immediately replied, “You’ve misunderstood, miss. We never require customers to share tables.”
She turned to Madeline. “There are other available seats over there. Please allow me to show you one.” She gestured, ready to escort Madeline away.
Madeline hadn’t expected Jessica to be so ruthless. Her face went rigid with shock.
Her nails dug deep into her palms as she fought to control herself, but couldn’t hold back. “Do you have to be this heartless?”
Jessica let out a cold laugh. “When were we ever close? Or are you talking about how you destroyed my marriage?”
When those words left her mouth, the waitress and everyone watching nearby looked at Madeline differently. So that was what this was about–the other woman coming to start trouble.
“You-!” Madeline nearly choked on her rage.
Jessica’s voice stayed perfectly calm. “Still sitting there? Want me to tell everyone exactly how you seduced my ex–husband?”
She did not intend to do it, but the threat was enough to rattle Madeline. And it worked–Madeline couldn’t handle the pressure.
And it worked–Madeline couldn’t handle the pressure.
She shot Jessica one last venomous glare, grabbed her purse, and stormed out.
When Madeline left, Jessica felt the strength she’d been forcing herself to maintain completely drain away. She slumped back against her chair, utterly
spent.
Madeline’s brazen appearance only confirmed what Jessica had suspected all along.
Either Brian had already found out but chose to protect Madeline anyway, or he hadn’t bothered to investigate because he’d never doubted her in the first place.
Either way, the thought left Jessica feeling suffocated.
Jessica thought, ‘Brian, if you treasure Madeline so much, why do you keep coming after me? she wondered bitterly. Or do you want both of us dancing around you?‘
