Freya’s been praying nonstop. And me?” I let out a small, dry laugh. “I’ve been imagining your funeral. Can you believe that? Your funeral. I even picked out your coffin color.” 

“Oh, yeah?” he said. “Lemme guess. Black, brooding, mysterious? Just like your soul?” 

“Obviously,” I snorted. “I even added matte gold handles.” 

“Ooh. Classy. If I had died, I’d haunt your ass for that.” 

“You already did haunt me, jackass,” I murmured, “Every time I blinked, I saw you on that stretcher. All that blood.” 

His smirk faded, just for a beat. “Kester… I’m okay.” 

“Yeah,” I said, brushing my knuckles gently against his arm. “Now you are.” 

He studied me. “How’s Kasmine?” 

I blinked, letting out a long breath. “Trying to keep her head up. You know but…” I paused. “She cried. A lot. And she’s not speaking to me much lately.” 

Always acting like nothing breaks her, 

“Ah,” he muttered, leaning back with a sigh. “She’ll come around. She loves

I smirked. “She called me a glorified monster.” 

“She’s not wrong.” 

We shared a small laugh. 

Then Norlan’s voice dropped a little. “My mom told me about Claire.” I nodded slowly. “How’s her family holding up?” 

“Barely,” I said, my voice roughening again. “Her mum collapsed when they told him. Her little brother… he just stares at her door all day. They’ve gone real quiet. It’s like they’re breathing, but not really living.” 

Norlan looked up at the ceiling, his jaw tightly clenched. “She didn’t deserve that. None of them did.” 

“No,” I agreed. “They didn’t.” 

We went silent for a moment before he spoke again.
