"Ricardo, you've done a great job."
The professor patted his shoulder, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "As long as you keep following orders, your sister's remains will be taken care of. Don't worry."
A flicker of disgust crossed Ricardo's eyes, but he kept his expression deferential, bowing his head slightly. "Professor, I understand."
The professor let out a cold chuckle, his smug face a mask of fake intellectual superiority. "By the way, do you know where Kenzo is right now?"
He hadn't been able to reach Kenzo; could he really be dead? With North America in chaos due to Irene's return, the royal family seemed to be falling apart. And Kenzo? His son could still be useful, especially if he's tangled up with Irene. Impressive, just like his father.
"I don't know; I haven't been involved in any of King's affairs," Ricardo replied.
The professor snorted. "His good days are numbered. I heard he's quite fond of Brielle. Just threaten him with her, and he'll give up his position without a fight. The old king still has dirt on many nobles. If that video gets out, they'll lose face and rally behind the old king. King wouldn’t dare kill all those nobles; he wouldn’t want to provoke the four major families."
So Fisher wanted money, women, and power. Greed knew no bounds with him.
During their journey, the local villagers had shown utmost respect for their vehicle, making way willingly. Yet, Brielle could still hear the villagers' retching and the mix of Arabic, clear signs of their reverence and extreme xenophobia towards the car's occupants. If Max's people arrived, the villagers would likely report them without the old king's men noticing. And with the unknown status of who might be carrying the disease, extreme caution was necessary, making the task all the more challenging.
No wonder the old king's whereabouts had remained a mystery for years. Brielle’s thoughts were interrupted by the sight of high fences she noticed on their arrival, clearly marking the area. Outside the fence lay the diseased villages. Rubbing her temples, Brielle pondered why local authorities would allow such fences unless the land had been forsaken by the government, hence the fencing.
Inside, the villagers, led by the chief mentioned earlier, indicated that the old king Fisher wasn’t the highest authority, clearly having struck a deal with the chief. Hearing noises from a nearby cabinet, Brielle opened it to find a dark-skinned woman tied up, visibly pregnant. Thinking of the prevalent disease, Brielle dared not make any contact.
The old king's men were indeed cunning, ensuring even in her lucidity, Brielle wouldn’t dare interact with anyone.
