Seeing that Irene had finally calmed down, Jonathan had the housekeeper clean up

the shattered plates from the floor.

Jonathan poured trene a glass of water and, gently pressing her shoulder, guided her into a seat, offering it to help her cool off.

Irene shot Jonathan a glare. “The more I think about it, the more miserable I feet. And you don’t even care about your own mother.”

“How else should I care for you? Should I just stay home and join

in bad–mouthing Liora? Quit my job? Stop earning money?

“Didn’t I already give you the credit card and hire several caretakers to keep you company? If you need anything else, just tell me, and I’ll make it happen.”

Irene fell silent once more. Finally, she muttered, “I don’t need so many caretakers hovering around all day. They’re getting on my nerves. Two are plenty.”

“Alright, anything else?”

Irene snapped, “Tell Liora to change her son’s name. How dare she call him Sanford?”

Jonathan said, “Liora has lung cancer. It’s metastasized in the last two days.”

Irene froze. Her fury instantly gave way to shock.

Jonathan asked Irene, “Is there anything else you want to tell me now?”

Irene was still frozen in shock, mouth agape and eyes wide with disbelief.

Irene seemed unable to believe that Liora had so little time left. It took her a while to collect herself, but she was much calmer. Just like before, she said firmly, “I have nothing more to say about what happened between me and Liora.”

“Fine,” Jonathan frowned, his gaze fixed intently on Irene.

Jonathan let out a sigh, and his patience finally ran out. Then he said, “Since you’re sticking to your story and won’t tell me anything, I’m done meddling in your generation’s mess.”

Irene’s mind was still reeling from those words. Liora had advanced–stage cancer, and it had metastasized.

As Jonathan turned to leave, Irene blurted out, her voice trembling with disbelief, “Wait, is that true? Does Liora really have advanced–stage lung

cancer?”

Jonathan looked at Irene and said flatly, “I have no reason to lie about this.”

“Wait, how did you find out about this?” Irene blurted out, her voice edged with shock.

Jonathan replied calmly, “Werner told me.”

Irene frowned. “Your uncle? He went to school with Liora, didn’t he? Why would he tell you about this?”

“He asked me for money, hoping I’d find some specialists to treat Liora. I refused.” Jonathan told Irene, “I’m not about to become a bleeding heart and help a woman who destroyed my family and has no real connection to me.”
