Bella raised her eyebrow. "Do you need anything else? Didn't you say you were busy? You just wasted your time trying to discipline me."
Lana stomped her feet and stormed off.
Bella felt a wave of exhaustion. She had never had any issues with Lana. It was all because of Ethan's feelings for her, and it just so happened that Lana had feelings for Ethan.
Hence, Lana had categorized her as her love rival by default. No wonder people always claimed that love rivals tended to treat each other with special hostility. That did indeed seem to be the case.
Suddenly, the head of the emergency department came into the lounge and said, "Bella, the entire department is so busy now. How can you hole yourself up in the lounge? Where's your team spirit?"
Lana had just left the lounge, yet the department head was here now. It was obvious Lana had snitched on her.
She wanted to explain herself, but the second she opened her mouth, the department head waved her off, showing no desire to listen to her. "Alright, that's enough. Go and do your things now."
Bella gritted her teeth and left without saying another word.
Right now, she felt like her legs didn't belong to her as they felt more like lead. Each step was extremely tiring. Not many people were able to handle such a demanding job, but when was life ever easy?
Once the group of patients with food poisoning had settled down, the department returned to its usual calm state. A group of doctors lay in the lounge, feeling too exhausted to even move.
One of the doctors couldn't stand his hunger anymore and suggested that they order takeout. After eating, those who had ended their shifts could leave while those on duty would stay.
Everyone placed their orders, except for Bella, who sat still.
When the person in charge of ordering asked what she'd like, Lana interjected and said, "She's not used to takeout, so we can go ahead and order without her. She's wealthy and different from us regular folks."
The others, unaware of the situation, believed Lana. Hence, one of them joked with Bella and said, "Alright, we'll eat on our own. You can take a break and grab something nice for dinner after your shift."
Bella didn't leave with Ethan as leaving with him now would be no different than announcing to the whole world that there was something going on between them.
The two of them left at different times, but Bella did not expect to see Ethan waiting for her at the side of the road.
She walked up to him and greeted, "Why are you still here? I'm going home to cook now as work has been exhausting today, and I could use a good sleep."
Ethan lowered his head as he said softly, "I'm sorry. Lana has been treating you that way because of me."
Bella sighed. "It's alright. I understand. I just want to do my job and enjoy my life. Let's go back. It's quite cold outside."
She thought Ethan would be able to hear the indirect refusal in her words, but unfortunately, he was too naive and didn't manage to grasp the true meaning behind her words.
